Here are some answers to common questions about our fabrics. If you're got suggestions for other things we should add, please let us know.
minimum order: all our fabrics are sold in 25cm increments (unless specifically stated otherwise). Therefore, if you want to buy 25cm of fabric, your order quantity will be 1. If you want 50cm, then your order quantity will be 2, and so on (see below). Please note that unless otherwise requested, all orders for 1 unit of fabric will come as a fat quarter (i.e. 50cm x half a standard width).
1 unit = 0.25m (cut as a fat quarter unless otherwise requested)
2 units = 0.50m
3 units = 0.75m
4 units = 1.00m
5 units = 1.25m
6 units = 1.50m
prices: prices for all single fabrics are per 25cm (i.e. you will need to multiply the price by 4 to get the per metre price).
fabric weights: fabrics classified as "light weight" are standard quilting weight. These fabrics are perfect for all your usual crafty applications, but if you have any questions then feel free to contact us or order a swatch (see our terms and conditions for further information on how to do this). If you love a fabric but think you need it in a slightly heavier weight, applying iron-on interfacing to strengthen it could be just the ticket.
how much fabric do I need? sometimes it's hard to know exactly how much fabric you're going to need. Here are a few points to help you out:
1. if the fabric is patterned then you will probably need to allow extra fabric for the repeat. If the pattern is small, the repeat will also be small. If the pattern is big, the repeat will be bigger, meaning you will need more fabric. If you need to know what the repeat is on any of our fabrics please just contact us and we'll help you out. Note that we specify the motif size for all our fabrics, so you get some idea of how big the pattern is and therefore how much you'll need to allow for a repeat.
2. often a pattern will specify the amount of fabric you need to buy. Sometimes this can seem like quite a lot and you may think that your fun project is quickly turning into an expensive project! Don't despair, more often than not you'll have plenty of off-cuts and can use those bits and pieces for other projects, like some wee booties for a friend who's just had a baby, or for a pocket for a bag, or any number of things. Often deciding what to do with the off-cuts is more fun than the original project!
3. if in doubt, always buy a wee bit more than you think you'll need. That way, you won't be caught short and you can always put the extra to good use on another project.
do I need to pre-wash my fabric? it's always a good idea to pre-wash your fabric, especially if it's cotton as some shrinkage can occur. While we don't expect that colours will run, it's a good idea to only wash dark colours with other dark colours, and vice versa for your whites.
